On October 30, we had a productive meeting with Gemma, the social worker from Las Magnolias residence, to bring our project “No More Closets” closer to more elderly LGTBIQ+ individuals who could benefit from it. Our goal is to support those who face unwanted loneliness and lack a stable support network, promoting a more connected and supportive community.
During the meeting, we discussed the issue of loneliness in nursing homes, which affects all elderly people but especially those who belong to vulnerable or minority groups, such as the LGTBIQ+ community (who often feel compelled to go back into the closet when entering a nursing home), and how we could work together to reduce it. Gemma presented some cases of residents who might join our emotional support program, allowing them to expand their social network and receive the support they need.
Our social worker Miriam, the two social integration interns, Edith and Emma, and the president of Colors Sitges Link, Prado García, attended the meeting.
We all agreed to work towards a collaboration agreement that would formalize this commitment and continue improving the quality of life for elderly LGTBIQ+ individuals at Las Magnolias.
