Since the human being began to decorate the walls of the caves until today, it has rained a lot. It is said that 1897 was the year that the first comic strip was published. Comics and graphic novels have accompanied us throughout our lives: heroes and heroines, stories of all kinds, which put images to stories of adventure, denunciation, romance…

Although the existence of homosexual relationships between classic comic book characters, such as Batman and Robin, had already been mentioned in the middle of the 20th century, we had to wait much longer until we could read the first comics and graphic novels in which the protagonists belonged to the LGTBIQ+ collective.

In our colloquium “The graphic novel and the comic as an activist tool“, we will have prominent authors who will give us their point of view.

The authors and authors:

sebas-martinSebas Martín

Sebas is already a classic and a reference in the world of comics. Award winnerCasal Lamda de cómic (1999) and Serra i Moret (2000) has collaborated in El Observador, Nois, Zero, Shangay, Gay Barcelona, Destinos or Toyland.

As a gentleman of a certain age, although not yet solvent, he has to his credit a lot of graphic novels published, among which the tetralogy stands out Estoy en ello, Aún estoy en ello, Los chulos pasan pero las hermanas quedan, Yo lo vi primero, No debía enrollarme con una moderna y Demasiado guapo, published in Ediciones La Cúpula.

His latest graphic novels: Mi novio, un virus y la madre que me parió; El corazón entre las piernas y Todos los hombres del dibujante. A non stop.

Rocío Vidal

He became known with the popular and controversial Machistadas: Situaciones reales, micromachismos y vergüenza ajena (Ediciones B), but he has a long career as a cartoonist for comic strips. He also collaborates with the magazine El jueves.

In this work, Rocío Vidal reviews some experiences lived in the family environment, in the couple or at work. The author highlights situations of lack of sexual freedom, misunderstanding, verbal abuse, micromachisms imbued in our DNA that we say (both men and women) without realizing it. Vidal also draws a series of vignettes that record queer theory, misunderstood by many in our daily lives.

His last adventure,  Sextories Magazine,

a meeting point for all those who want to enjoy erotic comics and sexuality from a perspective other than the established one: because eroticism is as diverse as people.

“Feminism is the radical idea that women are people.”

Ian Bermúdez

Writer, literary translator and activist. He has translated books like Ecoeducación by Daniel Goleman (ed.Joventud) and has published a book of trans poems, Ser h(u)ome*(à) (ed. Bellaterra). In addition, he is the author of graphic novels “TRÁNsit” (Pol·len Edicions, 2017) and “Transitem” (Pol·len Edicions, 2021), illustrated by the artist Lucía de Palau.

In her first graphic novel, he explores the fact of being trans in any way you want, with a critique of the health system of the Gender Identity Unit of the Clinic in Catalonia.

Transitem, recently published, is a graphic novel halfway between the chronicle of the trans struggle and the autobiography that shows us the strength of the collective.

Carlos Cubeiro

He is an art director, graphic designer, professor at the Massana School and an illustrator.

He has published two illustrated books, Raros, radicales y rebeldes y Raras, radicales y Rebeldes, both of ed. Modernito Books.

They are small books full of people. In total, between the two posts, 132 rare, radical and rebellious characters that Carlos Cubeiro has brought together under a single pretext, outlining his life and his career in a few lines, brief anecdotes, something that inevitably throws you into his arms, his books, his records, his pages from wikipedia. It is almost an onomastic dictionary, a saints’ book.

He already accompanied us at the Pink Vermouth organized by Colors Sitges Link for Sant Jordi this year.

On this occasion, he returns to Sitges to give us his vision on the topics that will be discussed at the table.

Montse Casaoliva

She is an illustrator, Sitgetana and is deeply interested in l’erotism. The serious drawings, which he publishes to his Instagram profile, attest to this.

Montse has accepted the challenge of moderating this colloquium, which, like all graphic novels and illustration, is diverse, colorful and with a common love: telling stories through drawings.
