From 16 June to 31 October. Can Rocamora. Maricel Museum

The Sitges Museums present the temporary exhibition: Pepito Zamora, un artista de revista (Pepito Zamora, a magazine artist)

The exhibition will be presented from 16 June to 2 October 2022 in the temporary exhibition hall located in the Can Rocamora building, Carrer Fonollar, s/n in Sitges (access through the museum entrance).

The exhibition, produced by the Sitges Museums, is based on a proposal by the Colors Sitges Link Association, and is curated by Isidre Roset, PhD in Art History, with the close collaboration of Montse Esquerda, historian of local issues.

This exhibition allows us to work on two of the strategic lines of the Museus de Sitges: researching and disseminating artists linked to local collections and heritage, and working on inclusive discourses from a gender perspective. José Zamora was openly and openly homosexual, at a time when this identity was morally censored, punished and silenced; nevertheless, he managed to succeed in his profession, to link himself to the different vital scenarios in which he lived and to earn the respect, complicity and affection of those who knew him.

This exhibition, presented as part of the 50th anniversary of the artist’s death, aims to recover and revalue his figure. José de Zamora, a multifaceted character who developed his artistic creation in different fields, including those linked to the world of show business, as a costume designer, illustrator and ephemeral creations, as well as writer of short stories and narratives and editorial cartoonist, a task in which we must highlight his collaborations with the successful Calleja publishing house. He was also a cultural agitator and collaborated closely in the cultural events of the different scenarios in which he developed his vital trajectory.

The exhibition presents a total of 85 works, paintings, drawings, graphic work and various documents, and is divided into three areas, apart from the one corresponding to the presentation, in the three places where he developed his activity and left the most important mark: Madrid, Paris and Sitges, where he put down roots and settled until the end of his days, and where his mark still lingers in many of the activities linked to his festive calendar.

In the words of the curator, the exhibition will show the most outstanding elements of the artistic career of the costume and set designer, draughtsman and writer, and the essential documentation to resituate and update the importance of the artist. It will also highlight the relevance of José Zamora in the resumption of Sitges as a favourite place for international tourism and the integration that he made between the colony of holidaymakers and the native population of Sitges, participating directly in the festivities of Carnival, Corpus Christi, the Vintage Car Rally, among others, publishing in the local press and organising exhibitions.

José Zamora, very unknown beyond the environments in which he developed his professional activity, at this point and unfortunately, is more recognized outside the country than in our country; the exhibition as we said, aims to vindicate and recover his artistic value and his personal and artistic trajectory.
