Photography and History
The Stonewall-Barcelona exhibition is an exhibition curated by the LGTBI Center of Barcelona in collaboration with the archives of the LGBT Center of New York, Colita and the Photographic Archive of Barcelona. The exhibition consists of 34 photos.
As in most social rights conquests, this story begins on the streets. On the night of June 28th, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in Greenwich Village, New York. For the first time, a large number of people refused to be arrested for their sexual orientation and turned to officers.
The facts of Stonewall marked the beginning of the LGTBI struggle, as later, in Barcelona, the first manifestation of Gay Pride, in 1977, was harshly attacked by law enforcement. The Barcelona-Stonewall exhibition portrays the beginning of this mobilization and the political and social context of the protests through some thirty photographs.
