Feria de Sant Jordi
April 23rd is World Book Day and it is also the day of Sant Jordi (Saint George), the patron saint of Catalonia.
This is one of Catalonia’s most magical days. Even though it is not a Bank Holiday, the Catalans take to the streets where they find bookstalls and rose stalls lining their streets. On this day over 6 million roses are sold with men buying a variety of roses for their mothers, grandmothers, wives, secretaries and girlfriends at an often extortionate price. Books, on the other hand, are sold at a discounted price with many authors signing copies of their books at stalls and in book shops.
Gay Sitges Link also takes part in this festive occasion with Joan Font organising a team of GSL Volunteers to assist in the sale of second-hand books donated by friends of GSL at GSL’s bookstall along the Sitges promenade.
On previous years three of our members, Jesús Saumell, Juan Carlos Uriszar and Lluís Ramirez, signed copies of their books.
We also organize some activities on social networks such as a reading of your favorite lgtbi book or a Queer festival on the occasion of Sant Jordi.
The proceeds from the sale of these books go towards the running costs of our GSL office.
